Very good condition M1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber with scabbard. The flat back blade M1840 were early war sabers used by both sides. Standard 1840 brass hilt with deep patina. Grip is worn with shark skin loss and very old repair to twist wire wrap. Blade is near fine with loads of original polish, absolutely no pitting although it has a few small nicks. Blade is stamped W. ( William ) Clauberg - Solingen. Clauberg used 2 different stamps, this mark without the knight was used before and during the civil war. Clauberg Solingen were very high grade German imported sabers by the most respected manufacturers in Solingen, Prussia and imported to the US for use in the civil war. Saber measures 41-1/2" overall with a blade length of 35-15/16". Scabbard measures 37-1/4". The hand guard leather is very fine condition. Production markings of XV (15 ) on guard and pommel. Handle and pommel are very tight. The two ring steel scabbard has a mix of patina and staining but no dents. A great early wristbreaker.----- I also have a C and J ( Clemen and Jung ) M1840 in similar condition with the grip in nicer condition.
