The .30-06 Springfield, also known as 7.62×63mm in metric notation, and called the .30 Gov't '06 by Winchester, was introduced to the US Army in 1906.

The "Thirty-Aught-Six" remained the primary rifle and machine gun cartridge of the US Armed Forces for nearly 50 years in iconic weapons such as the M1903 Springfield, M1 Garand, BAR "Browning Automatic Rifle" and the M1919 Machine Gun.

In 1945, General George Patton famously declared the M1 rifle "The Greatest Battle Implement Ever Devised."
